Car Rentals - San Diego

Hey guys,

My partner and I are heading down to San Diego via Amtrak from Los Angeles on the 6th July.

We haven't booked train tickets yet but can see from the Amtrak website that you can arrive at either San Diego, Old Town (OLT) or San Diego (SA)

As we are thinking of arranging a rental car for our time in SanDiego, we were wondering whether either of these destinations have a Rental company in the station or nearby (within walking distance). You'll have to excuse me as San Diego is completely new to me.

Thanks for the help I'm advance!

The Old Town Transit Center is just a platform with no services.

The Santa Fe Train Station (last stop, Downtown San Diego, what Amtrak codes as SAN even though it is not next to the airport) is a full service station with Luggage Service, ticket windows, etc. So you would want to end your trip there. I would arrange your car in advance, most major companies are in the area and will usually pick you up and take you to their office. I can't think of any off the top of my head that are within walking distance.

Without luggage Hertz on 6th Ave, Avis on Kettner and even Enterprise on F street which is a little further than the 1st two are easy walks, from Santa Fe Station, with Luggage you probably dont want to walk.

As mentioned above they should be able to pick you up, or I know often times will reimburse a cab ride. If for some reason you did have to pay for a cab it will only be about $5 to any of the 3 companies that I've listed.

You have several options and it depends on how much luggage you have and which rental car company you want to use.

You can get off the Amtrak train In Old Town and then get on the San Diego Trolley (light rail). Thesecond stop after Old Town on the trolley is Middletown and the station is literally right in front of Alamo Rent a car and Budget is across the street.

Avis Rent a car is at the Little Italy trolley stop.

And if you stay on to the Sea Port Village station (one stop past Santa Fe Depot or take Amtrak to Santa Fe Depot) Hertz Rent a car is inside the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Enterprise Rent a car will come get you and drive you to their location and you can do that from any of the stops and Enterprise is walkable from the Washington St Station on the trolley. Here is how the rental car situation looks on a map overall between the Old Town Amtrak station and Santa Fe Depot.
