Things to do, Where to eat, Transportation?

Hello,

My family and I will be visiting this early February. We're from Malaysia. We'll be spending two nights there. We already have plan for whale watching and visit San Diego Zoo.

Within that limited period of staying, what else can we do/visit? Also what are the hot spots to have meals?

At San Diego Zoo, how long would you suggest we spend time there? As I learned that there are many other spots to visit in Balboa Park.

We'll be staying at Gaslamp Plaza Suites. How would you suggest the best way us to travel from our hotel? Bus, cab, etc?

Thanks for feedbacks.

:)

Hi and welcome to San Diego,

I think you could get a good feel for the zoo and see many of the major exhibits in 4-6 hours time. You'll be given a map of the zoo when you enter, and you can figure out which of the exhibits you really want to see, and which you may want to skip over. It also may be worthwhile taking the bus tour around the zoo to get an overview first, and then go back to the specific areas that interest you.

I recommend getting to the zoo at 9:00 AM when it opens. The animals are more active in the morning than later in the day.

You're correct in that there's plenty more to see and do in Balboa Park. There are 14 museums that you can visit. Here's the website to the park:

Within the park, there's a restaurant called "The Prado" that is quite good.

Some say that it's worth making reservations for lunch there, but I've had pretty good luck getting in with a small party of 2-4 people without reservations. You may have to wait 15+ minutes if you show up at the height of lunch hour without reservations and have a larger party.

The Gaslamp District near your hotel will have tons of restaurants to choose from.

Along the waterfront are Seaport Village (a collection of shops and restaurants that generally cater to the tourist crowd), the USS Midway (a retired US Navy aircraft carrier turned museum), and the Maritime Museum.

You can also take a passenger ferry across the harbor to Coronado and perhaps rent bicycles to ride around the Bay Trail in Coronado.

You can use the Number 7 bus to get to the zoo from downtown, and not far from your hotel is the San Diego Trolley, our light rail system that can get you to the harbor front and beyond. Here's the mass transit website:

Enjoy your visit!

Oh my family and I are Muslims. Any Halal restaurants nearby that we can go to?

If there are none nearby, we can always have seafood. :)

Hi ,

This is a halal restaurant in downtown:

There are also Indian and Thai restaurants with vegetarian options which you might enjoy. There are many other restaurants that serve fish and other seafood.

Do we have to book early/pay online for the whale watching tickets? Or is it ok to walk in and buy the tickets?

FWIW, I can easily spend a whole day at the zoo. You might want to look at their online map and plan your time before you arrive.
