san diego port to los angeles aiport

We are getting off a cruise ship in San Diego in September and our flight back from LAX is at 5.30 p.m What would be the best way to do the journey? Can we do it in the same day or would we be better to stay over in LA? Cruise is due in at 6 a.m. but we don't want to be up quite that early!

The easiest would be to take a taxi from the port to the airport in San Diego, then fly from San Diego to LAX.

Another option would be to take a taxi from the port to the train station. Then take the train from San Diego to Los Angeles Union Station. From there you can take a Flyaway bus directly to LAX.

We love the train/bus to LAX, book a business class ticket and sit on the left side of the car for best views along the way. Buy your ticket for the Flyaway bus to the airport at the booth outside Union Station. It's a great, stress free way to travel.

Thanks, we rather think that it might be too stressful to do it all in one day, so have decided to hire a car from cruise and drive up to LA, flying home the next afternoon. It will give us time to see some more of that coast without any panic. Any ideas where to stay overnight to avoid heavy traffic, don't want to go into central LA?

I was in the process of comparing a hire car to the train when I saw your response. Here's what I was writing....

Or hire a car and drive to LAX (by far, the quickest) and probably less expensive. Let's see:

Via rail:

a, Taxi Ride to Rail Station in San Diego ($10 / 10 minutes)

b, Rail tickets to Union Station in L.A.: $37 per person

There's a 9:37 departure that arrives at Union Station at 12:10. Assuming there are 2 of you, the tickets would cost $74.

c. Flyaway Bus to LAX (35 minutes or so @ $7 per person) = $14.

So, all told the transfer will take about 3.5 hours and cost $108

By hire car:

a. Transfer to the car hire lot adjacent to the airport (20 minutes including waiting for the 'free shuttle')

b. Queuing up to get your car (20 minutes).

c. Driving to the car hire lot near LAX to drop the car. Here's one route: 2 hour, 17 minutes / 124 miles: http://mapq.st/TTbum2

d. Free shuttle to LAX (20 minutes including waiting time for the shuttle)

So, the transfer time would be about 3 hours, 20 minutes (gee, only 10 minutes faster than the train!) and the cost would be as follows:

1. From CarHire3000.com, a Ford Focus (a compact car) would run about $50 for a 1-day car hire.

2. Add to that the cost of petrol: 124 miles in a focus with 24 miles per gallon is about 5 gallons at about $4 per gallon = $20.

So, all told, the cost of the transfer would be $70, $38 less expensive than using the train.

As far as where to stay, consider staying in one of the beach communities near LAX (Manhattan Beach to the south of LAX -- closest to San Diego) or Marina del Rey, Venice or Santa Monica (to the north of LAX).

I agree with HSJ that staying overnight in a beach city would be nice. Manhattan Beach puts you close to LAX. You could also consider cities in Orange County like Laguna Beach or Huntington Beach.

Many thanks to all for the info. There seem to be some really nice hotels near Manhattan beach, so that will do nicely. Really looking forward to our trip.
