Looking for swimming pools that are open to visitors

I'll be in San Diego for 6 nights over the xmas holidays and have bagged a nice hotel on Priceline, but it doesn't have a pool. I'd really like to swim (as exercise) while I'm there, so I'm looking for gyms or hotels that might allow me to have temporary membership. Or a good public pool, of course.

Indoor or outdoor is fine, as long as it's heated.

What part of town is your Hotel? (San Diego is a very large place.)

The most famous public pool in San Diego is the Plunge at Belmont Park in the Mission Beach area of San Diego.

Interesting piece of trivia, before they rebuilt the building around the pool, the locker room scenes for the film Top Gun was filmed at the Plunge, pretending to be the Miramar Air Base location.

Sorry! I'm staying between Horton Plaza and the City Hall, at The Westgate. I'm happy to take public transport if it's not too far.

To get to the Plunge, it would be the San Diego Trolley to the Old Town Transit Center, and a transfer to the MTS Route 8 bus.

Also, a chance to swim in the Pacific Ocean, which is right next to the Plunge (Part of the Belmont Park Beachfront Amusement complex). Rent a bike, ride the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, etc....

Transit time would be about 30 minutes to an hour each way, depending on the connections.

The Mission Valley YMCA has great swimming facilities.

You can get there from downtown using the Trolley, it's only 4-5 stops down the line.

The La Jolla Y (http://www.lajolla.ymca.org) has a good pool and you can also swim at the Coogan Family Pool at La Jolla High School (http://www.cogganaquatics.org).

I forgot to mention that the #30 MTS bus will get you from downtown San Diego to either of these La Jolla swim spots.

Actually, while the Route 30 bus gets near La Jolla High, there is no bus service that gets close to the La Jolla YMCA, which is off La Jolla Scenic Drive North on Cliffridge. (Wow, I remember swimming there as a kid in the 70's.
