Family friendly hotel

Hi - Visiting San Diego for 5 nights in December with our son (7). We'll be staying in Carlsbad for 2 nights to see Legoland and San Diego Wildlife Park and have a car to drive to/around San Diego.

Looking for a hotel that is convenient to attractions and restaurants and maybe has somewhere our son can run around a bit. A one-bedroom or suite would be great (under $175) and so would free/cheaper parking and a quieter area especially at night.

I am considering the Homewood Liberty Station (worried a bit about airport noise), Fairfield Old Town, Holiday Inn Old Town or Holiday Inn on the Bay (my husband is a member but know these rooms are smaller) or hotel at Coronado.

Any recommendations for other hotels? One better than the other?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Perthmum - Welcome to the SD Forum!

The Homewood Suites Liberty Station is a really good choice and popular with families. Have you looked at reviews and was there mention of airport noise in the room? In Dec your windows will likely be closed. Very large park next door with a playground and places to eat next door and some more a little further on. It's one of the few places that has free parking.

Holiday Inn on the Bay is a terrific location being downtown and just across the street from the Bayfront. You'd be able to walk to lots of restaurants, walk along the Boardwalk along the bay and marina. There's a brand new park kind of across the street from the USS Midway.

Old Town is much busier and gets pretty crowded and is pretty touristy but the hotels are generally reasonable and there is a fair amount of greenspace for your son to run around. It's centrally located.

Coronado is great. I'm not sure what you'll find in your price range in Dec. You didn't say 'when' in Dec you are coming. Prices will be higher the closer to Cmas. There'll be an ice skating rink in front of Hotel del Coronado on the beach.

The "Holiday Inn Old Town" is not really in our Old Town neighborhood and I don't think it is a good location for you. It will probably be less expensive than the other choices. You can see actual hotel locations by putting them into Google and then clicking on the map that will appear.

The Fairfield Inn Old Town is a better location in walking distance to small shops/restaurants and some greenspace where your son could run around.

The Homewood Suites/Liberty Station is the most popular hotel for families because it offers so many amenities at a fairly decent price.

There are many other choices because with a car you really have the luxury of staying at any hotel that is within your budget since you don't have to rely on our public transit system.

You might also consider the hotels in our Shelter Island neighborhood which would be quiet/scenic and with space to run and play.

Depending on your dates Humphreys Half Moon Inn has been one we have enjoyed and seem to have good pricing this winter. They do charge something to park your car but the price of their smaller suites is so low that it probably would work out. In that neighborhood there's also the Bay Club and the Island Palms.

Thanks Riff M and elizzie4000 for your advice. I will check out the other options - leaning towards Homewood or Holiday Inn on the Bay but Shelter Island sounds interesting.

So many choices in San Diego!

We loved The Homewood Suites in Liberty station! The hotel is fantastic, the location is great, and the staff super friendly. We didn't hear any airport noise at all.

We stayed at the Hyatt at Mission Bay next to Sea World. Our kids loved the water slides and there were fire pits where we could do smores. Lots of spaces to run around for the kids. The main downside is that you will need to drive to nearby restaurants if you don't want to eat. And I don't think the water taxi runs during the winter and firewords at Seaworld (which you can see from the hote) may only happen during the summer -- but you can check.
