5 day trip to SD

My wife and her parents are flying to SD on Xmas day and staying at the Paradise Point.

We know absolutely nothing about the city or things to do except that we want to do SeaWorld and we want to do the zoo. What else is a must? What about our hotel? Any information would be good. Thanks

Hi Brian!

I can't help with the hotel other than what I've read here. Be sure to check reviews on TA and on the internet. Perhaps yelp.com. I do know that you need a car to stay there and there is nothing within walking distance. So to eat off property you need to drive or take a taxi.

Withough knowing what you like to do it's kind of hard to give info other than a generic list. If you're active people there is hiking, biking, kayaking, jet skis, segway tours. At Christmas there will be a ice skating rink at the base of the NBC bldg at Horton Plaza downtown. And the Hotel del Coronado on Coronado will also have one on the beach.

Seaport Village is nice for a stroll or to sit for a drink

You can also go to Coronado either by car or Ferry. There is a gorgeous beach in front of the historic Hotel del Coronado.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to San Diego! elizzie hit many of the highlights in her great post.

A few others to add:

Not far from your hotel are Pacific Beach and Mission Beach. This is where the younger surfer crowd hangs out. It's got a nice long boardwalk (concrete sidewalk, technically) with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. Lots of great people watchng there.

There's the old Belmont amusement park with its arcades and wooden roller coaster:

A little farther south is Ocean Beach, which sports a more funky, laid-back vibe, perhaps for the older surf crowd.

Along the coast of Ocean Beach are Sunset Cliffs, a good place to--you guessed it--watch the sunset over the Pacific. :-)

Farther up the coast is the Birch Aquarium, part of the UCSD complex.

And near the Torrey Pines Golf Course and State Park is the Torrey Pines Gliderport (although I'm not sure people will be hang gliding in December--worth a call to check out)

To see the first Spanish mission on the west coast stop by Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala

Finally, it's a little bit of a drive from your hotel, but if you're interested in where U.S. athletes train for the Summer Olympics, you can check out the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, south of San Diego.

Obviously, there's more than enough to choose from. To help narrow the list down, let us know a little more about your interests.

Hopefully you will have a rental car during your visit!

Paradise Point is located inside Mission Bay Park which has beautiful green space with trails for walking/biking and manmade bays for water activities.

There are no restaurants in walking distance other than the one at the hotel.

You have been given a looong list of possible activities so enjoy reading about all we have to offer and if you have some specific questions about any of them please ask!

We will certainly be renting a car. My in-laws are interested in doing some sort of kayaking that he heard about, on the ocean I think (?) I definitely like to see places that would make a beautiful picture. I know my wife and I have always wanted to swim with dolphins. Is SD a place we can do this?

Generally, we re like many other tourists. Loafing around shopping and eating in unique restaurants. We are more thank likely up for anything that is fun and exciting, so a lot of the links you provided sound very good!

Sunset over the ocean sounds nice.

I would just like to note that December weather here is not really swimming weather unless you are in a heated hotel pool. The ocean is cold(low 60s)and it also may be rainy. It is good to have lots of possible ideas for activities but I'd not pay for lots of tours and things ahead of time.

I agree with Riff. Don't pay for anything ahead of time. Especially tours.

Brian - There's an article on Paradise Point in the Business section of today's newspaper. The first page talks mostly about the history of the hotel. The second page talks about it as it is currently. The newspaper had some good photos which don't appear in the online version.
