1. Re: what to do

Having been in San Diego on a few labor days, what we like to do is:

Go to the evening zoo...You can enter till 8 and it closes at 10 through Labor Day. You might want to make reservations for dinner that night and get there earlier. They have an "inner zoo restaurant" called Alberts. Call (619) 685-3200 for reservations. Note: They also have an early bird special if you get there between 3 and 5. We like to take the Zoo Tram Tour al around the park and then go back and see the animals close up and personal.

Sounds like you're going to Sea World with Dolphin Encounter.

If the budget allows, also recommend breakfast or lunch with Shamoo.

We went there (as a couple - no kids) in February and had a great time. Got to talk to the trainers, food was good, and having whales swimming so close to the table...absolutely cool.

Of course, summer without going to the beach by Hotel Del Coronado is like a summer without sunshine.....

Sitting on the sundeck with a view of the ocean in the afternoon is quite fun and then a stroll up the beach (one of the best in California.) If you want to splurge go across the street from the Del and rent a boat to take a tour of the water areas....and rent a small boat from Seaforth Rentals...

A visit to Old Town (quite unique to San Diego) is fun to go and also interesting places to eat. You can watch people making hand made tortillas....and for a fun dinner, we like to go

to Rockin Lobster

http://www.rockinbaja.com/

but there are several fun restaraurants in Old Town.

For great fun (and if you like animals) go to Wild Animal Park....

it can be warm in the summer, so go towards evening if possible..... There are two ways to see the animals.

By tram or upclose and personal by truck (where you can actually feed the animals.)

For late night dinner or bar scene, of course, Gaslamp District is quite fun. If you plan to have dinner here, do make reservations as sometimes over Labor Day the wait for a table got a bit long....

If you have time drive north to La Jolla and go kayaking at La Jolla Caves or go to Torrey Pines

http://www.torreypine.org/

If you like casinos (some do/some don't) they have some interesting Indian casinos for a short drive out of town.

Viejas - both casino and very nice outlet shopping area

http://www.viejas.com/

and

Barona - http://www.barona.com/

are interesting to go to. We spent an evening do both while staying in the area...

After that, perhaps the Maritime Museum in San Diego...

and area around it. (This is the area you often see photographed for TV of San Diego.)
