Boston budget hotel or guest house?

My fella and I will spend 2 days midweek in September in Boston. I used to live in the North End for a summer so I know the city quite well. Had a look at hotels in the general Boston downtown/ backbay/north & south end areas - crazy prices for somewhere to lay your head for the night! We will be doing lots of walking about during the day and drinking beer/eating grub/ going to music gigs in evenings so don't plan to spend much time in hotel. Looking for something cheap and cheerful on the T-line maybe? No car & don't want to be relying on taxis. Am leaning towards Harvard or Somerville - what do you think? A 1-2 star hotel or guest house will do... In an area with a bit of life to it....

What's your budget? There is a hostel option in Boston, and there are outlying hotels on the MBTA in Newton, Brookline, and Quincy that might work

Yep, we'll do hostels. Would like private room to lock away bags etc though and as himself has Crohns, a private bathroom is kinda key! I know hostels do these types of rooms but haven't found a decent looking one yet in Boston that does! We'd spend up to $150/night though so we'll probably get something a bit higher up the food chain for that?

September is an expensive time. Check the Oasis Guest House and the Copley Inn (budget inns in Boston, both good, central locations).

You can get a private room with ensuite at the above-mentioned HI hostel for about $199 per night in high season. Dorm beds probably about $60 each

Yes, what is your budget?

Not gonna find something in Boston at that price. At least nowhere I'd suggest a tourist go!

Check a few pages of this board for other threads requesting cheap lodging and you'll quickly find all of the suburban options that will work along with the subway.

You won't find anything close to the city under $200/night. Maybe even $250 for September. You might try an Air BnB or VRBO if you know the city well and know what neighborhoods you fancy. Boston hotels are very expensive in comparison to other east coast cities. More so than NYC, I've found and I've lived in both places.

Agreed, $150 is too low for Boston, which is right up there with New York City for high hotel rates. September is high season with fall foliage tourists starting to pour into New England and conventions. You could get two dorm beds with shared bath at the HI hostel for that (which has only been open a few years and is really modern and nice).

Agreed also that Air Bnb sounds like the way to go for your budget, But, check here first if you find something that you like so that we can advise you as to the neighborhood. Some areas of Cambridge and Somerville aren't easily accessible to the subway.
