Rental car agencies close <1/2h to Boston, near to T station

We would like to take the metro into the city, stay for a few days, rent a car( near a T station) and then on the return to Boston, take the Metro back to Logan. I am finding it daunting to match areas and rental car companies. The airport rentals are exorbitant(Sp?) and parking is probably a bear. I do not want to stay too far out of the city with a long Metro ride in and out( two teens in tow) but the hotels are pricey inside the City. Which might be the closest T ouside of Boston proper with rental car agencies nearby? Thanks.

Ok ... One thing at a time.

1) hotels. Prices vary dramatically based on what is happening in town. In order to get useful advice you need to tell us your exact dates, how many people in your group, how many beds you need (can two people share one double bed) and your preferred budget per night, in US dollars

2) car. Yes there seems to be "airport adder fees" that drive up the price. There are cheaper options downtown but office hours are sometimes limited. Where do you plan to go once you leave Boston? Knowing that will help us advise you. If you are heading north it doesn't make sense to send you south for a car.

Your question is basically a variant of "is there an affordable hotel near public transportation" but with the added factor of nearby car rental agencies (although it's not clear to me why you want to rent a car).

If your hotel is on the T, you can take the T to a rental car agency even if it is't walking distance from your hotel. You could also use a rental car company like Enterprise, which will pick you up.

You may be able to arrange a rental that you can drop off at their airport location. That would be very convenient if you will have the car until you are ready to fly home.

Your post is confusing, but it seems that maybe you want to spend some number of days exploring Boston without a car, then pick up a car for some number of days exploring the region, then fly home. Correct?

So, first (and hardest) step is identifying the hotel. Provide exact dates (prices fluctuate). Can your family of 4 share 2 beds? Or do you need 3 beds (harder)? Is a sofa bed okay?

What is your target budget per night? It's fine to indicate a range. Keep in mind that taxes will add ~15%.

There are rental car agencies all over Boston and environs. Most hotels can hook you up with a rental car. Tell us where you want to stay and what your budget is. With several people using transit you might not save much by staying out of town.
