Car hire and related airport query

After flying to NY and spending a few days there, we're off to stay with friends in Connecticut for a few days before getting a hire car to go to Cape Cod. From there we'll be spending three nights in Boston before flying back early in the morning from Logan. I'd really welcome any thoughts about whether it's easier en route from Cape Cod to Boston to drop the car off at the airport (and catch a cab into town to start our three days in the city) or to drive into town to drop the car off. We're pretty confident drivers but it will be our first time driving in the States. Secondly, the general view previously seems to be that staying in the centre of Boston (and catching a cab) is almost as handy as staying at an airport hotel if we have to be there for 5.45am for the early flight to Heathrow. Is that still the view? Your thoughts would be really welcome and will help me decide whereabouts in Boston to stop and which car hire company to go with.

Ease of car drop off in town will depend on which rentak company you are using and what time of day are you arriving in Boston.

As for lodging ... Stay in town. There is no traffic at 5:30 am and travel time will be 10-20 minutes depending on where you hotel is located.

Yes, drop the car off before your three days in Boston. If you can do it downtown, that's better, if you can do so. Driving in the city is no more difficult than driving at Logan, and dropping it off downtown puts you in the middle of where you want to be. You can drop people/bags at your hotel and then drop the car.

While the airport hotel is obviously much easier for the early flight, it puts you at a severe disadvantage for sightseeing. There shouldn't be any traffic at the hour when you'll be traveling. Downtown should be fine. You might think of staying near Faneuil Hall just a tunnel away from the airport, ten minutes tops at that early hour. If it were me, I'd pick something like the Marriott Long Wharf, Boston Harbor Hotel, Intercontinental, etc. (see on map) and that makes for a quick cab ride the morning of your flight. Given that it's so early, you could probably buzz in from Copley Square too. It's just a little farther.

You mention cabs... don't be afraid to try the subway for getting around while you're sightseeing. It's very easy to use.

Have a great visit!
