Driving routes--advice needed

We'll be heading to the Boston area to do college visits soon and could use some driving advice. I am not sure that what looks like the shortest routes on mapquest will actually be the best routes once you figure in congestion and other local factors. Advice from local commuters would be greatly appreciated.

Here's our itinerary:

We'll be heading to Medford to see Tufts from Providence late morning (well past rush hour) on a Monday. So, the first question is what's the best route once off I-95?

Then, we'll head out of Medford at about 4pm (in the height of rush hour) and head toward Portland. Any suggestions for this leg, and any info on what we should expect time- and traffic-wise?

Thanks so much!

Take Route 2 East to 16 East. It's a left exit near the Alewife T Station. Look for the small Tufts sign about a half mile on the right.

On the way to Maine, go back to 16 and continue going east - not back the way you came. After about a mile you will come to 93 North and go on your way north from there.

I agree with Alan.Stay on 95 as it skirts to the west of Boston to the Lexington area where you will pick up route 2 toward Cambridge then 16 aka Mystic valley parkway.

I would print out the google directions via the route above and the alternative 95 to 93 to Medford route. Then as you're leaving Providence, listen to 1030 AM radio, which has traffic reports on the 3's. 9:03, 9:13, etc.

That way, if there is a major tie-up on 95 North around Boston, you can then take the other route.

Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. (And it can happen on the other route too--at least you'll be informed.)

Chuck mapquest - google's maps are top notch. You can set the time of day to get an estimate/best directions too.
