Trip to Boston over New year

We're thinking of coming to Boston over the New Year - can anyone reccomend attractions and things to do and see while we're there?

Can you also give me advice on the 2 choices of hotel, The Harborside Inn or the Hyatt Regency - which is in the best location? This will be our first NYE as Mr and Mrs so we wanted to do something special if you have any other advice we would be greatful!

Hi Redhead,

In addition to the usual attractions, which have been discussed in the forum, a huge New Year's tradition in Boston is First Night. It's a performing arts festival with performances all over Boston, capped off with a great fireworks display over the harbor.

Although it's way early for information yet, here's the website with some descriptions of last year's event:

As for your hotel choices, the Harborside Inn has an excellent location, next to Quincy Market and near the waterfront and the North End. It would be a good choice. The Hyatt, there are two in Boston area. The one in Cambridge on Memorial Drive is not a good location; it's not near anything or any public transit. The Hyatt at Downtown Crossing on Ave. De. Lavayette is a decent location, near Chinatown and not far from Quincy Market.

All else being equal I'd pick the location of the Harborside Inn as being more "in the thick of things". The area around the Hyatt tends to be quiet at night.
