Train booking

We are planning to travel from Boston to NYC on 1st August by train.

Do we have to book in advance or can we just turn up at the station and buy a ticket

Hi Calimerox,

I can only tell you that I took my nieces to New York by Amtrak at South Station in Boston a few years ago and ended up buying the tickets 4 or 5 days before the trip. It was my first time traveling this way and I wanted to make sure we got seats and everything was okay and of course it all ended up running very smooth. I used to work right near South Station so I just walked in and bought the tickets at the counter. You can either go online at www.amtrak.com, or call them and get them over the phone or else go to their desk at South Station for them.

The Boston to NY train was very good, I remember it left around 6 at night and we arrived at Penn Station around 11:30 or so and the Hotel wasn't too far from there. I would highly recommend taking that train to any one that wanted a change of pace.

Have a great time!

Amtrak now requires advance booking for all of its trains. Of course, you could still try for same day tickets but they will charge you more--assuming they have any seats left for the train you want. So to be on the safe side, and save some money--do book in advance.

While I agree that you really should book in advance if possible, both for Amtrak regulations, and for seating availability, there are options if your situations doesn't allow for that much advance planning...

For about the same money, you could look into Limoliner... a luxury bus that operates between the Hilton hotels in Boston and New York. There are also various bus services leaving from South Station... the most well-known being the "Chinatown" bus services that offer fares under $20.
