Atlantic Fish Co. or Scollay Square?

Going to Boston next weekend...only 2 dinners, one of which will be some Italian in the North End (probably Lucca). I'd like to have seafood for the other, but don't have to have a seafood restaurant, per se.

Was going to reserve at Atlantic, but have now been tempted by Scollay. Any opinions?

Hi Miller88

I've heard quite a LOT of good words about LUCCA's, one of these days I want to get there myself, you picked a "good one"!

Here's two really good sites other than TA's to check out restaurants in Boston and Cambridge

"Scollay Square" restaurant? EVERY ONE is talking about it! I'm hearing a LOT of good words from local friends about "that one!" I'm curious myself about it! I read about it again here for the 10th time, so every one is checking it out lately!

My father always always talked about the old "Scollay Square" it's WAY before my time (of course!) I just remember as a kid living in the City and my parents would drive us in to that area when they were tearing it all down and building the JFK Building and they'd reminisce AND reminisce ALL about the place, they must have had a great time! So that's all I know about "Scollay Square!" This restaurant sounds VERY VERY good to me and from the sounds of it? It's NOT a bunch of stuffed shirts that go there, which is a GOOD thing! Enjoy your time in Boston, Have Fun! You'll have a fantastic weekend!

I too have heard nothing but good things about Scollay Square - the restaurant, not the neighborhood LOL.

It is perched at the top of Beacon Street, in the space that used to be The Black Goose for years and years.

As for a trip down history's memory lane, the Scollay Square neighborhood used to be the section of Boston from Bowdoin Street as Cambridge curves around and becomes Government Center. It was considered the entertainment center of Boston, with theatres, bars and nightclubs galore. The neighborhood wasn't so much dangerous as it was transient and a bit seedy. Kind of like Times Square in the early 90s. The Old Howard, the last of the theatres to be demolished, in the area where Center Plaza is now. Vaudeville and burlesque were popular entertainments at these theatres, as well as boxing matches and later on, striptease artists. During the war it was a popular place with enlistees prior to their shipping out, or with troops in at the Navy Yard on leave.

Remnants of Scollay Square Station can still be found on the Blue Line platform at Government Center. Walk to the very end of the platform and peer into the tunnel heading westbound and you will see a part of the original mosaic sign for the station. Pop into The Red Hat - at the corner of Bowdoin and Cambridge Streets - and take a look at the murals painted on the walls in the upstairs dining rooms, as well as old pictures from bygone years in the pub down below.
