Favorite Irish Pub?

We are making our first trip to Boston and thought it might be fun to go to an Irish Pub to eat and drink and sing with a small group one night. Where do you recommend? We are staying in the Back Bay area. Thanks!

"Authentic" Irish pubs have proliferated in Beantown of late. My favorites are M.J. O'Connor's, on the south side of the Park Plaza Hotel, for food, and The Druid in Cambridge's Inman Square for atmosphere. Most evenings, there's a live "seisun" at the latter bar. At whatever establishment of that ilk you first find yourself in, there will be copies of the "Irish Emigrant" newsprint magazine available. Many places advertise in it. The free publications "Stuff @ Night" and "Improper Bostonian" also carry listings and ads. Check those three periodicals to see when seisuns and other "theme nights" such as karaoke will be going on.

Various friends sing their praises for The Kells in Allston, The Squealing Pig in Mission Hill, and The Banshee in Dorchester. The Harp near North Station, The Skellig in Waltham, and The Irish Rover in Dorchester are but three more places out of many.

As far as authenticity goes, I think the smaller the better is a good rule in Boston concerning Irish pubs. It doesn't get much smaller than Tir Na Nog in Union Sq. Somerville. It's just big enough to have a postage-stamp sized stage for a few musicians. The Burren in Davis Sq. Somerville is much larger, but also has music and a good Sunday lunch. I love the Field in Central Sq. It's less traditional (they play a lot of Brit-Pop), but the staff is legit. That should get you started.

Slainte!

BTW: BEST ENGLISH PUB is the Elephant & Castle in the Financial District around the corner from Washington St.
