Looking for a romantic cabin for a couple of nights in December. Prefer 1 to 2 hour drive from Charlotte.
You would need to define what "a romantic cabin" means to you. To us the most romantic cabin we rented was in a remote area of Alaska. No other cabins, no restaurants near by, no supermarkets, no running water, etc. we got dropped off by a float plane in a pure wilderness. I don't think this is what you are looking for. Check Cabin Fever in Saluda (http://www.cabinfevernc.com/) about 45 minutes south of Asheville, NC or maybe cabins in the Table Rock State Park, SC (southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/…350.aspx).
Both places are under 2 hours from Charlotte, NC. Well, maybe Table Rock is a little over two hours. We have friends who stay in Saluda and loved it. We drove yesterday on route 11 by Table Rock and the area is beautiful and scenic beyond any words. I would love to to stay at one of the cabins there.
You may also want to drive farther to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Check out http://www.oakhavenresort.com/
I concur about Oak Haven! It's worth the drive!
My choice is http://www.asheville-cabins.com/index.cfm
We have used them twice now and have been very satisfied.
Yes as someone said, the Great Smokey Mtns has MANY nice places to stay - but if you try going on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, you will find several parts of it closed in December. (ps the Pkwy is the most beautiful senic drive in the area)
But, another idea is to get on U.S. 74 going west, about an hour out of Charlotte, turn north on NC 221, you will immediately see some nice countryside, and with-in about an hour, you will have passed several places to stay - or just a little farther and you will be in Little Switzerland, for a relly nice lodge, B&B and great views, high in the mountains, not very far from the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi river, Mt. Mitchell (tho it's on the Pkwy) (all of this is assuming that the roads are not closed due to snow ^__^)
ps There is a faster way to get to Little Switzerland, but not a more senic route than 221 - 74 from Charlotte.
