Black Canyon/Curecanti in winter?

Heading to Gunnison/Crested Butte for skiing. Is it worth to take a detour on the way to check out the Black Canyon or Curecanti for an hour or two? or should I save it for summer? are they mostly closed in winter?

Both are gorgeous in the winter! You won't be putting a boat in the water at Blue Mesa reservoir this time of year ;-) but that doesn't mean the scenery isn't well worth it. When conditions permit, we've often seen people ice skating on the frozen lake in the winter. Ask around or call Curecanti for ice skating conditions and safe locations if that interests you.

At Black Canyon, the North rim roads are closed in winter. The main road that runs along the South rim is closed for skiing & snowshoeing beyond the Visitor Center. If you have cross-country skis, the road is a wonderful place to tour -- the views of the canyon are fantastic. Or, borrow a pair of snowshoes at the Visitor Center and go follow the road or the trails that lead right from the VC to viewpoints. You can often just walk a short way from the VC along the trails without snowshoes if it hasn't snowed recently (the snow tends to get packed down on the trails).

Can you see the Canyon from around the Visitor Center?

Yes, there are nice views from the Visitor Center -- especially from the deck outside the building. There is also a viewpoint parking area about 1/4 mile BEFORE you reach the Visitor Center called Tomichi Point that gives you some great views from a large viewing platform. That viewpoint is open all year.
