What are metal coverings on home windows?

We were recently driving from Ft Lauderdale to the Keys, though Miami and the Homestead area, along the interstate. There were housing developments on both sides of the interstate. Many of the homes had metal coverings on either part or the entire window(s).

What are these for?

Those are hurricane shutters. All new homes in Florida are required by code to have some of hurricane protection. Some have heavy duty glass windows which are very expensive. Others have different types of shutters. The metal ones are inexpensive and easy to install. Many people only live here during the winter months so they put up the shutters while they are gone. It not only protects them from hurricanes but makes it much harder for someone to break in while you are gone on vacation.
