Business Travel Advice on Internal Flights and Accomodation

Greeneville,

I may be in the USA carrying out research for 5 to 6 months starting out in Greeneville or Atlanta. I will be travelling all over the USA. Can anyone advise the best places to find reasonably priced internal flights, car rental and accomodation ? Are there any deals for regular users with the bigger companies in any of these areas ? Is there anything worth joining to get a discount ?

Is it cheaper to travel by train ? I will be mostly staying in the bigger cities.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Well, you definitely don't want to take the trains or buses here. It's not like Europe at all. Trains are expensive and hard to get around in. Bus stations are most often located in bad parts of town.

Hire a car or fly.

Greeneville is not considered a big city and flying there will cost you. Atlanta, on the other hand, is a huge airline hub. Delta Airlines is NOT a discount airline but their hub is in Atlanta (ATL) so you should be able to get a flight from their to smaller cities in the South like Greenville. US Air, American Airlines and United Airlines also probably fly into places like Greenville in the South.

There are several discount airlines but many do not fly into major airports so you have to look according to the cities you plan on visiting. For example, Southwest Airlines has lots of cheap flights, but they do not fly into Atlanta. They do, however, fly into Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee.

There is another discount airline called Allegiant Air that has direct flights from Knoxville, TN and also from Chattanooga, Tennessee to St. Petersburg (PIE), Florida, just outside of Tampa. They do not fly into Tampa (TPA), just St. Pete, and only on certain days.

Southwest Airlines has deals on car hires. Go to their website and you can see if they have any specials going. You do NOT have to fly with them to get a car hire through them. www.southwest.com

There are several budget car hire companies. In fact, there are so many, it is hard to list. Some are Enterprise, Rent-A-Wreck (not in all cities), Alamo, Dollar, etc...

Knowing the cities you are visiting and the order would help. Unless you are going far distances from city to city, a car hire is probably your best bet.

If you can share more details, I'd be happy to help further.

GRAMMAR correction:

Not "should be able to get a flight from their"

Sorry, had to correct myself.

Ca Vol,

Splendid response ! My route may well be 'on the hoof' so it will be difficult to give any plan just yet. Do you have any idea how expensive the Travel Inn type hotels cost ? Do car rentals charge by day only or would you be penalised for travelling long distances ?

Another thought would be obtaining a laptop computer with WiFi access. Is there a shop that sells a whole package including Internet access ? I think a known chain would be better so that I can get someone to fix it wherever I may pitch up.

Kind Regards

Hi again! Let me see if I can answer your questions as best I can.

"Do you have any idea how expensive the Travel Inn type hotels cost?"

Well, this depends on the city. If you are in a really small town, it could be as little as forty dollars a night, maybe even less, for one person. A medium sized city may run around $50 and a large city might be around $80. I am guessing of course. Here are some websites to give you a better idea:

Super 8 Hotels (this is probably the lowest budget chain hotel in the US, so don't expect much)!

http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/home

One step up from Super 8 is the Motel 6. I prefer these over Super 8 and although it is very basic, they are always clean:

http://www.motel6.com/

Here is the link to Travelodge Motels. Some of these are nicer than others:

www.travelodge.com/Travelodge/control/home

"Do car rentals charge by day only or would you be penalised for travelling long distances?"

Actually, I think they like it when you rent for longer lengths of time. Also, you should be able to get unlimited mileage. If a company quotes you limited miles, then find another company. Many also have great one way rates. Here are some sites of less expensive car rental companies:

http://www.dollar.com/

http://www.rentawreck.com/

http://www.alamo.com/

http://www.enterprise.com/car_rental/home.do

These are competitive pricing search finders:

http://www.orbitz.com/

http://www.hotwire.com/

http://travelocity.com/

And this is the airline I told you about earlier that has a good search engine for rental cars:

www.southwest.com/cgi-bin/carTab…

"Another thought would be obtaining a laptop computer with WiFi access. Is there a shop that sells a whole package including Internet access ? I think a known chain would be better so that I can get someone to fix it wherever I may pitch up"

I'm not sure I understand this last paragraph. You want to buy a laptop here, right? The Internet access part, however, confuses me. If you bought a laptop with wireless capabilities, then you could connect online pretty much anywhere that had wireless, even Starbucks coffee. Please clarify so I can help better with this part.

Hope all this helps!

Rental cars, if you are going to return to where you get it you can get unlimeted milage if you are going to return it somewhere else they charge high for that, and not all compainies do it.

Get your international drivers liecence NOW before you leave your country.

The sooner you reserve a rental car the lower the price is.

The lap top, The store Best Buy sells plans where you can take it into any Best Buy and they are every where but it is high cost and the chance of a lap top breaking with in the first few months are very rare. Also if it breaks and it is not something simple they do not fix it there they send it off so it takes 2 to 3 weeks to get it back. I would go to Walmart (they are almost every where) and pay much less.

All of the major airlines (US and Overseas) have cards you sign up far and earn points and get discounts at places. You can sign up free on line at each site. It takes a lot of flying to get anything free but you never know how much you will do.
