Getting from Amtrak to Nob Hill Inn on Labor Day

Could someone tell us how to get to Nob Hill Inn from Amtrak on Labor Day. We know that Emoryville will not have buses running on Labor Day and so we are taking the bus provided by Amtrak into San Francisco but need to know which cable car to take from there to Nob Hill.

do you have difficulty walking? the tourist areas are in a very small radius about 2 miles. you could always get a cab, bus, walk part of it. a straight line from nob hill to the water, north, in the bay is 1.2 miles.

It sounds like your options will be different depending whether the bridge is closed that day. As ramblinsal mentioned, check back soon for updates. :-) It may also make a difference where you book your Amtrak ticket to. If you book it to San Francisco, they normally put you on an Amtrak bus from Emeryville to San Francisco since there are not train tracks across the bridge. I believe the tickets cost the same or close to the same for terminating in Oakland vs San Francisco. I'm not certain that you get a free bus ride from Emeryville to San Francisco on their bus unless you book your tickets to San Francisco. Maybe you could get on the San Francisco bus with only tickets to Emeryville, not sure how much they check the tickets for that segment. The safest way to get the bus to SF is to book your endpoint with Amtrak as SF. It could be a longer ride around to one of the other bridges if the bay bridge is closed, though.

If you want to take a ferry, they should be running if the bridge is closed. The ferries run from Jack London Square in Oakland, which I believe may be another Amtrak stop you could choose. Assuming your train arrives on schedule, ferries should be running that time of day. The ride can be a bit slow, with semi-infrequent departures, but it's scenic. Check ferry schedules beforehand to verify schedules if you want to use that option.

Even if the bridge is closed you can get to San Francisco on Bart. From Emeryville you could take a taxi to MacArthur Bart station (only about a mile and probably $10 fare). Get on Bart to San Francisco Embarcadero station (between $3 and $4 per person) and then get another taxi from near Embarcadero Station to your hotel as mentioned previously. I'm guessing total cost for two doing this is around $35 with two taxis plus Bart.

So you are coming in on Amtrak at 4pm (good luck with it being on time) and just have one evening in SF ? Why come all the way for just a few hours in SF? Most would suggest 3-4 days to see SF. You may want to rent a car and just drive to Monterey or Carmel instead of this hassle for a few hours and then come back at the end of your trip to SF.

But if you do want to spend the time in SF that evening, and are keen on saying FW, then perhaps you can stay in FW.

If you are arriving here in the afternoon and only spending one night before moving on, I advise against it. Because the Bay Bridge is supposed to be closed over Labor Day*, getting into SF will be more of a hassle than usual. You can have dinner and spend a pleasant evening in several nearby cities, not just in SF itself.

Which Amtrak train are you taking? There are alternatives to staying in SF for the night if you are interested. If you are arriving on the California Zephyr or Coast Starlight, the chances of you getting here on time are pretty slim anyway, in which case you'd have even less time to appreciate SF.

I suggest spending time in SF after you are done in Monterey, assuming you are coming back. That way you aren't rushing into the City just in time for dinner (if your train is on time) or just in time to miss dinner (more likely scenario).

*Although the bridge is supposed to be closed over Labor Day, it seems unlikely to happen. There is an entire political saga involving the new span and the bolts used on it if you are curious. An official opening date (and the associated bridge closure) will be announced on July 10...supposedly...so stay tuned.
