or this using google maps and zagat ratings

Never heard of this place but our go to Indian places are Dosa which is off Geary street and Amber near 3rd and Mission or Shalimar (which is in the Tenderloin) and we go there only for takeout and at lunch time (not dinner)

Bayatuning Afghani food is not Indian food !! Nothing against that specific restaurant which has great kabobs by the way and while the two countries are almost neighbors (or are they neighbors the boundaries there are different based on the map you see) and share some dishes, they are really not the same.

Thanks, I have looked on Yelp and Urbanspoon Darbar gets good reviews better than Shalimar. I don't want high end or high budget really just good food and its not too far from our hotel. Thanks again

Ok good to know. Next time we will get our tandoori fix there. :-) A colleague who is from india told me the sign of a great Indian restaurant is to order their Daal Soup and if that is good the rest of the food is good. FWIW

There are more than one Shalimars, the one in the Tenderloin is excellent.

Also in the Tenderloin, Lahore Karahi and Chutney.

From what I've read Shalimar for takeaway Darbar for sit down. Lahore Karahi looks just too much like a cafe in my opinion. Will read up on Chutney Thanks

I know belosimer, but I just love that place. And I suggest that there is greater difference between Northern and Southern Indian cuisine than between Northern Indian and Afghani cuisine.

Lahore Karahi is not a clean place to eat at or get food from. Mela Tandoori on Golden Gate between Van Ness and Polk is recommended. They have a daily lunch buffet http://melatandoori.com/

From what I read you wanted "just good food" and not "high end or high budget". Lahore Karahi is both those.

I would not eat in a place that wasn't clean and you can draw your own conclusion on buffet restaurants.
