The area is lower Russian Hill, borderline Fisherman's Wharf. Bay Street is a very busy two-way street. At rush hour it's a popular commute arterial toward the Golden Gate Bridge. So if the apartment faces Bay you may get a lot of street noise.

Close to transit: the 30-Stockton runs on North Point (one block north) to get to North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square. Going the other way it will take you to the Marina and a transfer point for the GG Bridge and GG Park (the two are a couple of miles apart). The 19-Polk runs on Polk and will get you to the commercial area of Polk Street and Civic Center.

It's also very close to Ghirardelli Square and walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and the Alcatraz ferry. From there you can catch the F-Market &Wharves to the Ferry Building. The cable cars run along Hyde Street as well.

It's not exactly what I call a "neighborhood" as there aren't local shops around but it's nice and safe. And close to a lot of popular visitor sights.

This is my neighborhood! I think it's a great place to be based out of for tourists- you're within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, the Marina District, etc. Ghiradelli Square is just across the street, Aquatic Park is really nice to walk through. There are some cute restaurants up the hill on Hyde Street and lots of restaurants. Polk Street is more "neighborhoody" and has lots of restaurants and cafes to choose from- my favorites are Leopold's (German) and Pesce (seafood). There's a great little coffee place called Blackpoint Cafe on Hyde and North Point, just across from Ghirardelli Square.

The main transit lines are the cable car on Hyde, #30 bus to get to North Beach/Chinatown/Union Square, and #19 or #47 to Civic Center. Trader Joes and Safeway are about a 10 minute walk down the hill.
