Low-key New Year's Eve in SF

Will be spending a week in SF over the holidays this year in the Nob Hill district, and I'm looking for a low-key (non night-club) type of way to spend New Year's eve. Something appropriate for a couple, late 30's. Possibly a lounge, or live music, good food...

Hoping for a place with a good vibe and energy, but not over the top, and not too expensive. Thanks for any recommendations!

The problem with New Year's is it brings the amateurs out. In fact it brings everyone out so places are crowded and usually with people who have partied a bit too much. Perhaps something like the Big Four in the Huntington Hotel which is on Nob Hill and is has a nice piano bar. It's not cheap however.

Prices on meals at most places are usually jacked up and extra seats squeezed in to pack in as many people as possible. Even at some neighborhood dining spots I've been disappointed and no longer consider going out for a meal on New Year's.

I don't know about low key on NYE. www.opentable.com will have menus and events for NYE later this month and you can look at www.sfstation.com or www.sfweekly.com for NYE events.

I agree with Sal. It is going to be crowded everywhere. Her suggestion of the Big Four is good. You could also look at events in the Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins but neither will be low key.

Sal and Belo made the points that I've been playing with for a couple of days on how to answer this. I'm not sure there's such a thing as a low-key NYE celebration... rowdy crowds, higher prices (and frequently lower quality) are just by-products of the frenzy that is NYE. Maybe find a neighborhood bar that isn't having live music or a special celebration? But the crowds will still be in a "must party" mood, so there's still the "amateur night" aspect to contend with.

There is a civic fireworks show, usually viewable from around the Ferry Building. There's no entertainment, there are crowds, but it's usually just the show, then go home.
