drinks after dinner at Union Square area

Does anyone know of a nice place to have drinks after dinner around the Union Square area? We are planning to eat at Scala's for dinner. Enjoying a nice view of the city while sipping away is an added plus.

Thanks.

This should work

Harry Denton's Starlight Room: Long before big-band swing music was popular with the MTV set, the Starlight Room was the swanky place for drinks. Perched on the 21st floor of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, its lush velvet booths, swinging jazz music and incredible views are all that's needed to bring out the inner Rat Packer in you. 450 Powell Street, (415) 395-8595.

BTW

Check Blue & Gold for night tours of Alcatraz. They are now up.

I second the Starlight Room.

If you're willing to go a few blocks up, check out Top of the Mark on Nob Hill which also has amazing views and great martinis. It's on California Street, just up the street from Scala's.

And, as an added bonus, the Scala's is practically IN the Sir Francsic Drake.

Great!! What's better to round up the evening with great friends, while sipping drinks and enjoying amazing view of the city?

We are two 30+ couples. Which venue will suit us better? Harry Denton's or Top of the Mark? Are there cover charges? And are there other places you can suggest that draws younger crowds?

Thanks for all your help in making our vacation much more enjoyable.

Others already mentioned the main "view" options. There is also Cityscape on top of the Hilton Towers, the Marriott has a bar on the roof and the Grand Hyatt has a bar and restaurant on top. Not necessarily young crowds, but views. For fun...

There is the Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel

the Gold Dust on Powell, Azul on Tillman Place, Biscuts and Blues on Mason, Les Joulins Jazz Club on Ellis.

I will also second the Gold Dust for good drink specials and something low key. Definitely doesn't have a view and it's not "posh", but it's enjoyable.

To the many helpful posters on this forum: can anyone please narrow down on where will be the one place to go for drinks after dinner at Scala's? I'm sorry I didn't post specifics when I first asked this question. We are two 30+ couples, and we will probably not be into "jazz". We are looking for a venue that is more hip, drawing the same age group crowd while mingling at the bar sipping drinks after dinner. We don't mind the place being loud & crowded, (that's the fun part), and we enjoy people watching. I've checked into Harry Denton & Top of the Mark, and the venues are both built a while back. (looks dated from the pictures) Are these the only two places that offers views around Union Square area? Will the Redwood room that Wes Tyler mentioned a better venue for us? If there are no other places that offers view of the city besides the above, we might have to choose fun over view. Any comments are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks y'all!!

Harry Denton's Starlight Room meets most of your criteria. The Top of The Mark is an older crowd for the most part. However, the Redwood Room is very "hip" and worth a look. The Gold Dust is a good old fashioned San Francisco bar. Azul is a possibility. Ruby Skye is a night club that probably has everything you want except a view. There is also the Red Room on Sutter. Blu Pointe and Voda Lounge are a short walk from Union Square on Belden Lane and Claude Lane respectively.

It sounds like you want something memorable and if that's true, you probably want to check out the Redwood Room. It's an amazing place, with amazing drinks and amazing prices to match. check out their website -

If you can only go to one place that night, you should go there. Just make sure you clear the credit card...
