Any great yarn shops in the downtown area?

My daughter is a knitter, and I was wondering if anyone has a favorite yarn shop in the downtown area. They will be flying in and using only public transportation, so that limits the possibilities. We live in a small community, and I know she would love to get lost in the middle of an amazing selection of yarns!

I don't know anything about any of these places, but yelp lists these. http://yelp.com/search?find_desc=yarn&find_loc=San+Francisco%2C+CA

Artfibers is downtown and a number of the others should be reasonably easy to reach from there (such as those in the Castro, the mission, cow hollow, pacific heights).

Most of the places in the city are boutique stores carrying upscale specialty yarns which are generally quite expensive. Is that what she's looking for? Less expensive stuff is carried at craft stores like Beverly's but there are none in the city.

ImaginiKnit would be my first choice in SF. Atelier Yarns isn't bad, just not as impressive. I have never been to Artfibers -- their yarns are all custom, so a place to go to see yarns you will not find elsewhere.

If she makes it to Napa, Yarns on First is a gem of a yarn store.

As noted, all the yarns are decent quality or better, ranging from under $10/skein to a whole lot more. But the prices are no higher than you will find anywhere else in the country, even if they don't quite compare to Michaels and Joanns!

Thanks so much! ImaginiKnit sounds like the kind of place where she could just go and windowshop the amazing yarns available, even if she can't afford any of it! Or maybe she'll splurge on something really special that she has never seen in Montana. It would be a fun stop for her during her visit (tho maybe not so much for her sister!)

ImagiKnit is not downtown, but it's easy to get to on the J-Church St. metro line (it will be aboveground by the time it gets to 18th St.; get off and walk west on 18th, toward the hills and away from the park and high school).

If you're going out there, you can check out Dolores Park and some of the neighborhood businesses along 18th from Church to Valencia and along Valencia. This is an "emerging" area that gets a lot of attention here at TA. It has restaurants, indie businesses like book, antique, and bicycle shops, and the usual neighborhood grocery stores, cleaners, auto mechanics, etc. If you walk to Dolores (a block east of Church, where the train runs) and turn left, you'll come to Mission Dolores, one of the birthplaces of San Francisco in the 18th century Spanish colonial era. It's a historic landmark and is open to the public (small donation) and is also an active Catholic parish. In the other direction on 18th (continuing west from ImagiKnit) is the Castro.

Britex is on Geary near Stockton, kitty-corner from Macy's. It's mainly a fabric store with every kind you can think of, but also has a small yarn department. It's a narrow building with 4 or 5 stories. The yarn section is not huge, and has mainly high-end specialty yarns; you won't find economy worsted weight yarns there. It also has a small selection of knit and crochet notions.
