Tiburon or Sausalito

We will be in San Francisco in the Spring, and would like to visit either Tiburon or Sausalito. We will be using public transportation -- ferry, I assume. Just want to talk around the place, see the scenery, maybe have lunch as a nice cafe, etc. We likely will not have time to visit both of these places. Which would you recommend? How do they differ from one another? Thanks!

Sausalito is a bit more touristy; Tiburon has a better view. Both are easily accessible from the Ferry Building. I'd probably go to Sausalito and eat lunch there.

Tiburon is smaller and has fewer restaurant and cafe choices. Sausalito has better views of San Francisco but is more touristy. Both would make for a nice escape from the City, but I generally recommend visiting Sausalito instead of Tiburon if choosing just one.

Blue & Gold Fleet Ferry serves both towns in a loop, running Pier 41 --> Tiburon --> Sausalito --> Pier 41 (counterclockwise) except during rush hour, when the ferry runs Ferry Building <--> Tiburon only.

Golden Gate Ferry operates Ferry Building <--> Sausalito all day. Besides the advantage of catching it from the Ferry Building, it is less expensive than B&GF and operates using a larger vessel (usually the attractively remodeled M.S. Marin).

Another perk of Sausalito is that it is also served by Golden Gate Transit. If you so wish, you could ride a Golden Gate Transit bus from downtown to the Golden Gate Bridge, then get back on the bus to go into Sausalito after you are done there. (GGT stops on both sides of the bridge.) You can then catch the ferry back to SF.

Another vote for Sausalito.

I like Tiburon but it's a bit more of a sleepy hollow than Sausalito and as already mentioned many more restaurant choices in Sausalito.

Thanks. So I can take Golden Gate bus to the Golden Gate bridge, then walk over the bridge, and then take bus from the other side of the bridge into Sausalito? Is that right?

Yes, that is correct. You would pay $4.15 when boarding the GGT bus, ask for a transfer, and use it to complete your journey after walking across (or walking part of the way across and coming back).

Alternatively, you can take Muni to the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, walk across, and catch Golden Gate Transit from the north end to Sausalito. This may be more attractive if (1) you have a Muni Passport and (2) you know for certain you'll be walking all the way across. The Passport would cover the Muni fare, and the GGT bus fare is only $2 if you ride just from the north end of the bridge to Sausalito.

Note: All GGT buses stop at the Toll Plaza (be sure to ring the bell). To get from the Toll Plaza or north end of the bridge to Sausalito, you will have to use Routes 2, 10, or 92. See http://www.goldengate.org for details.

One advantage to Tiburon is Sam's, a bar/restaurant with outdoor seating right on the bay. Otherwise Sausalito is slightly more interesting to walk around in.
