Alcatraz - evening or day tour -- other attractions not to...

I was wondering which was better -- a day or evening tour to Alcatraz and is Blue & Gold the way to book? Also, we're staying at the Hotel Monaco near Union Square -- what else should we see in the area on the day we hit Alcatraz? Thanks!!

Blue and Gold is the only way to get to Alcatraz.

There are pluses and minuses of day versus evening.

If its evening, it may be foggier so the views are not as clear as earlier in the day. Not sure however which day you are going....I'd choose more based on what you want to do.

I'd probably start the day at the Ferry Building and enjoy breakfast. This area also ha a nice view of the Bay Bridge, food markets, "gourmet" food stores, and interesting place to go. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/

You can also walk along the bay easily here.....

After the Ferry Building, I'd then suggest going to Fisherman Wharf and doing the Alcatraz Tour. Let's say this is about 11 a.m. and you're back by 1 p.m. If you book in advance, there is a kiosk where you slide your credit card through and get voucher for the Alcatraz tour. its very easy.

After Alcatraz, I'd then head on over to Boudin Sourdough Company which is very close to where the boat to Alcatraz takes off. I'd recommend having clam chowder. The bakery here is excellent and the bakers are quite entertaining making bread in various shaps.

I'd then walk past the Open fish stalls by fisherman wharf, and continue down to see Musee Mechanique

After that you might want to catch a City Tour (Fire Engine) tour which leaves from San Francisco of the city. This will take you across the Golden Gate.

I'd then walk over and see the elephant seals at Pier 39, possibly stopping for a moment at one of the Pier 39 stores.

I'd then head down towards Gheridelli Square - there are various art galeries/stores on the way down. If you like seafood, enjoy dinner at McCormick and Schmicks; having save room to enjoy or share an ice cream sundae at Gheridellis' afterward.

After that, perhaps drive over and see Beach Blanket Babylon evening show (Note: you could also instead skip Gheridelli and go to Teatra Zinzanni Dinner Show instead.)

Enjoy planning your trip!
