ferry between san francisco and monterey

Will be in San Francisco the middle of January. Is there a ferry or someother public transportation between San Francisco and Moterey? Want to go whale watching.

Don't know about your prospects for January (it strikes me as a prime chumming opportunity, with you supplying the chum), but in general boat-based whale watching tours departing from San Francisco are very standard fare. Punch the keywords "whale watching san francisco" into your favorite web search engine and you'll get a ton of hits.

Getting to Monterey itself is a different story. Undoubtedly any "limousine" service can do the deed, and from the public transportations standpoint, there's The Dog (Greyhound), AMTRAK (you'll actually spend most of the trip on busses as you'll get bussed from a San Francisco pickup point to Jack London Square in Oakland, board the train, debark in Salinas, and bus from Salinas to Monterey), and for the most creative approach, BART to San Francisco International Airport, then Monterey Salinas Airbus, a private scheduled service <http://www.montereyairbus.com/>.

There is no ferry from San Francisco to Monterey. The ocean is usually way too rough and unpredictable for that.

There is, however, one of the most beautfiful stretches of road in the world: Highway One, which hugs the coast. Takes 3 hours from SF -- an hour more than the direct major freeway route.

The Whale watching trips out of Monterey are much better, IMHO, than the ones out of SF -- and there should still be grey whale moms heading north with their newborn calves in March. Best whale watching outfits in Monterey are Monterey Sports Fishing (Fisherman's Wharf) and Santuary Cruises (Moss Landing).

There is a seprate Monterey forum here on travel advisor.

The peak whale watching season in those parts doesn't really start until mid-March., and there's great viewing at several spots along the coast. If your interested in great wildlife viewing, January is prime time for the elephant seals down at Ano Nuevo State Reserve--about an hour south of SF. Call ahead, get reservations to take a tour--you won't be disappointed.
