Yosemite in October is reasonable unless you get official National Weather information to the contrary, i.e., an early snowfall or forest fires. If you drive 395 north from Las Vegas and plan to cut through from Lee Vining down to Yosemite Valley you could be turned back if there is an early heavy snow. There are other approaches to Yosemite, however. You can research that by going to the National Parks website. If you do intend to stay over night in Yosemite, I recommend you check for room availability and make a reservation way in advance.

Otherwise, driving from Las Vegas to San Francisco, I would just play it by ear. There are so many lodging options in towns along the way (Mariposa, Merced, Fresno, etc. and other towns along the highway 99 corridor) and so many do not require advance reservations. These would be typical franchise hotel/motel operations, unless you are looking for a more luxurious stay.

If you like shopping, you may want to stop by the shopping outlets in Barstow. We stopped by there last year and filled up the car before returning to SF.

Hi. I made this trip only last week. We left Vegas at 8am, drove through Death Valley then up the 395. Stopped at Bishop for lunch (about 1pm). Continued driving north all the way and stopped at South Lake Tahoe for the night. Arrived there approx 6pm. This proved a good choice as there are plenty of places to eat and a couple of casinos if you like that sort of thing. From there it takes approx 4 hours to drive to San Francisco on Hwy 50 past Sacramento. I would recommend Hwy 395, there is some lovely scenery on the way. It didn't seem like we spent a long time in the car, it was a very pleasant drive.
