Alcatraz - Pre-booked tickets

Is it really necessary to collect the tickets one whole hour before departure?

We did the 10.15 tour in November and this is fine, there was only one ferry before us so the island wasn't too crowded, although i wouldnt want to go any later. We arrived at the wharf early (still on UK time!!) took some pictures and got inline with about 20 minutes to go. This was about right. We had a good vantage spot on the ferry to take some cool pictures as we approached the island. I really wouldnt arrive to late as the queue can get awfully long, true you will get on the boat but part of the fun is having a good spot to watch the Island get closer.

Enjoy the tour, take a cardi!!
