Culinary caution

If you plan a trip to Bar Harbor in the off season, better call your restaurant choices beforehand to make sure they're open. We loved the cool sunny days in May, the lack of crowds , the open hiking trails. But the restaurants' schedules are not coordinated. Many were not open, or opening on different dates in May or June. Call ahead.

Monty -- Welcome to Maine life in the "off" or "shoulder" season.... It's one of the thngs about non-tourist season travel that we try to caution folks about when they come to the Maine forum for travel advice during those times of year. Sorry you had to find out about it the hard way. Glad you enjoyed the rest of tyour visit.

Yes, most of the restaurants do open in May and June; however, there are at least half a dozen restaurants that remain open throughout the winter. Your lodging host should have a complete list. It is difficult during the winter to find a restaurant that is open 7 days a week and Sunday and Monday are difficult nights but they are out there, especially by April and May. If you are not staying somewhere with helpful staff, also visit the Chamber of Commerce on the corner of Main Street and Cottage and they will also be able to advise you.
