Bar Harbor first week of May

Visited the Boothbay/Brunswick area with girlfriends in October & was so charmed by the people & scenery of Maine that I talked my husband into the upper portion the first week in May. Flying into Bangor & trying to decide if a whole week in Bar Harbor is too much? Want to see ANP, but we aren't going to be doing any serious hikes, although we love to walk & enjoy the views. Would love a suggestion for a cabin or a cottage-don't want a true B&B & yet don't want to do a hotel either...IS there anything a bit in-between? Also thinking about a night or two on Monhegan Island? Too much? It will just be the two of us enjoying some time away (kids in college) & we are looking forward to exploring! Have 8 nights to do so, so any suggestions are appreciated. Last but not least...know you can't guarantee the weather, but is it safe to assume a rain coat & some hiking boots are a must? After reading some of the other forums I'm starting to wonder about the black flies too?!!

The first week of May is a bit early for Bar Harbor, Acadia, and Monhegan Island. Could you possibly put it off until early June? The leaves don't appear on the trees until around Mother's Day. It will look pretty much like winter to you, coming from Florida.

For example, The Island Inn on Monhegan Island doesn't even open until May 24th. There are little cottage clusters in the Acadia area. Here's one: http://www.barharborcottages.com/ But they don't open until May 16th.

In fact, this year, because of budget cuts, The Park Loop Road won't open to car traffic until May 18th. The winter access will be open so that you can drive to Sand Beach and to Thunder Hole. But you won't be able to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain and you probably don't want to bike or hike up the mountain either, although many will.

You'll need more than a rain coat and hiking boots in early May. The early morning temperatures will be in the 40s. The highs might reach the 60s during the daytime. Black flies might or might not yet be out.

If you are up for an adventure, you will definitely find a place to stay and places to eat, and easy walks in Acadia during the first week of May. Just be forewarned on what to expect.

Appreciate the warning-am really disappointed though to hear that so much of the area & accommodations will still be closed. Unfortunately our timing can't be changed-already scheduled the time off & the airline tickets a few months ago. All the literature I received last year indicated that things opened back up in May, although the budget cut part is obviously a new issue. We did know it wouldn't be warm. We get plenty of heat & sunshine in Florida so we welcome the opportunity to wear an actual coat & enjoy some colder weather. Don't know now if we should just spend a day or two seeing Bar Harbor/ANP area & then head out somewhere else to explore...

There will be enough open for you to have a great time. Most of the restaurants and accommodations will be open by the beginning of May. Some of the boat tours might also be running. There are tons of easy walks and easy hikes that you can easily get to. The only place you won't be able to get to without hiking is the top of Cadillac Mountain.

Some of the cottages probably won't be open yet. If you don't want a traditional B&B, try looking into the Acadia Inn and the Quimby House. Both are smaller with nice rooms, no breakfast, but great downtown locations.
