Trip planning for Aulani

We will be visiting on the second leg of our trip - first on Maui where we will do a lot of excursions including snorkeling, luau, Haleakala. Outside of Aulani are there any recommendations for us to see? We would like to visit Pearl Harbor. We will be traveling with kids ages 10 & 7 most likely loving to spend bulk of time at resort.

Thanks!

<<Outside of Aulani are there any recommendations for us to see?>> Aulani is isolated. It is not a central location. There is not much there, and the resort is very small in Disney terms. It's not an amusement park. Kapolei has only a handful of restaurants outside of the resorts, zero shopping and few activities.

My expectation is that you will be driving the hour back and forth of Honolulu alot. Also - head up to the North Shore and over to the east shore beaches as well. There is a TON of things to see and do on Oahu ... and Aulani is handy to none of them. Make sure that you have a good travel guide and map for Oahu now so you can do some planning in advance.

We get a number of posts who envision Aulani as something they have seen on the Mainland ... Orlando, Anaheim ... and it simply is not. So please be prepared. I assume that you are renting a car ... and a must.

Pearl Harbor is about a 20-30 drive from the Aulani. To see the USS Arizona Memorial, it would be wise to get advance free tickets on-line. They charge a 1.50 processing fee per ticket. Check www.recreation.gov for the tickets. There are also other memorials and things to see while out there. Get tickets for later morning as the traffic will be heavy until after 8:00am.

You might want to drive to the north shore where the world famous surfing beaches are and/or to Waikiki.

With kids in tow you will have a great time. If your one trip into Honolulu is for Pearl Harbor you will be fine, about an hour back in...Waikiki is not terribly exciting for 7 and 10 year olds!

Do try and spend a day exploring the North Shore if you can pull them out of the lagoon.

It doesn't take an hour to get from Ko Olina to Pearl Harbor. Shoot, I live right outside of Waikiki and can get to Makaha in less than an hour!!

Seems like a lot of keiki really liking the boogie boarding in Waikiki.

Well Fuzz...as you know some of us can only speak to the experiences we've actually had staying up there! Visitor experiences can be very different!

Keep a car the whole time you are on Oahu so you can stay flexible on eating. Ko'Olina is pretty limited in dining, but Kapolei has good options.

Driving into the USS Arizona Memorial should not be difficult. I'd buy tickets on line and either get there first thing in the morning or plan on very early afternoon so you can avoid the morning commute traffic.

A day driving up to the North Shore would be fun with a stop at Dole Plantation for Dole Whips and maybe a ride on the train.

I need to modify my comments in #1 - Aulani is in KO'OLINA ... and Ko'olina is the map I attached. Not many restaurants or things to do outside of the resorts.

Kapolei is a "city" relatively close to Ko'Olina. More food options. Suburbia. No atmosphere. Traffic.

(Sorry - typing too fast.)

Plenty of great things to do on Oahu and many of them are convenient from Ko Olina. The north shore is very convenient from Ko Olina. Definitely head up there and see some of the most famous beaches in the world. Stop for shaved ice or experience a shrimp truck. And if you're there in the winter you might get to see some great waves. Ko Olina also has a marina and there are multiple opportunities to take a sailing excursions. Pearl Harbor is very easy to get to from the west side. Nice hiking available around Ka' ena point. Great snorkeling available around Oahu including Sharks Cove. Hanauma Bay is very popular but that would be a bit of hike as well Diamond Head.

Always keep in mind that traffic to and from Honolulu (to in the morning/away in the afternoon) is much like commuter traffic everywhere. Just plan accordingly.
