Kiteboarding in Kailua

Just a heads up that Kitesurfing or kiteboard lessons are no longer legal in Kailua. They were never permitted but now there is a specific law making it illegal to do lessons. It is still perfectly fine to kite surf at Kailua Beach, just not commercially. Be careful as there have been sting operations by the Honolulu Police Department and I believe its a 'criminal offense', meaning it stays on your record. If you really want lessons, make friends and be prepared to be a beach bum for a few weeks. It's better that way anyway as the instructors are getting $200/hour and its gonna take upwards of 10 hours to get going. Not something you should try if your just here for a quick vacation but still worth it if you can put in the time.

Well, what you say is kind of right and part of what you say is really wrong.

True, no commercial entities at this time at Kailua Beach. You can take lessons but you will have to haul all the equipment from the shop to the beach.

No, it's not a criminal offense and really, they won't be ticketing the visitor but will fine the company if caught doing something they know they aren't supposed to be doing.

Yes, you can haul your own equipment, but no you cannot have an instructor standing next to you giving a lesson in the park or on the beach. That would be commercial.
