BEST Kailua Beach Secret

Parking at Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai is very crowded on the weekends. A little known secret is Castle Beach on the opposite end of Kailua Beach Park.

You can park on Kailuana Loop and use the PUBLIC BEACH ACCESS which is adjacent to the neighborhood (south of entry). This is a PUBLIC BEACH RIGHT OF WAY. It is never crowded and is perfct for boogie boarding, sandy for little kids and when the waves are right, there is a great surf break off shore. This is great because the surf break is a short paddle out and this way no surfers or surfboards bother the kids playing in the shallow water.

Lots of parking on Kailuana Loop. Best part of Kailua Beach!

We stayed with friends (almost across the street from that beach access) and used that access several times a day! it is a great beach! Not many people use the beach access (located just a few yardsthe the right of Kailuana Loop) and it amazed us that it is always empty at that beach!

Our kids loved the boogie boarding waves. Very gentle and sandy bottom. Now we are being hit with a horrible rain storm in the city and the kids are begging to go back to Kailua.

You're right, lots of parking on Kailuana but no one must know that because the street is always empty.

We will be back!

Thanks for the tip. We'll have to check it out.

Is it a clearly labeled street Kailuana Road? Can you park on that road? What direction do you take to find the access road to the beach?

Take N. Kalaheo Ave. traveling NORTH.

Kailuana Loop will be on your right (right before a bridge) look for a lava rock wall and turn right into the neighborhood.

Park anywhere on Kailuana Loop.

Once you park,

Walk back out to N. Kalaheo Ave. and turn left.

Walk for a few yards and you will see the Public Beach Access path on your left.

Enjoy! The beach there is empty and lots of free parking! People think Kailuana is a private road but it is not. Plus it is a widew street and can accommodate on-street parking without bothering the flow of neighborhood traffic.

What about Kalama Beach park? If I was just visiting, that is a great location to get more beach for your vacation time. A local might be able to provide a good parking suggestion. That loop up the road is pretty far away IMHO from the Kailua Beach spot that is near the dock and snack shack.

There's also the option of dropping off the bulk of the people and equipment and having the driver walk back from wherever. It might add 10 minutes to your time.

I recommend about 6 hours of Kailua beach time with an umbrella or two ($5 each at Walmart) and picnic food/drinks. Start at 8 or 9 am.

It is definitely at the far end of the beay from the boat ramp and the snack bar. But if one packs a picnic they will find that the north end of the bay is absolutley the BEST! No crowds, wide sandy beach and tons of parking on the Kailuana Loop.

You are correct, there is no snack bar, boat ramp, nor showers & restrooms but for a few hours to enjoy the part of the beach that only a few locals take advantage of ( and absolutley no visitors know to take advantage of this part of the bay) is worth not having a shower or snack bar :)

Trust me, you will thank me!

Thank you Redcity!

I signed on last night and read this post. We are staying in a B&B not far from this beach access and you are correct. There is ample free parking in a nice neighborhood (made us feel 'safer' with the rental car warnings we received from Budget).

The beach is lovely. There are even trash cans at the the beach access and we could toss our picnic lunch rubbish before getting back into the car.

No one was there, except a few small groups scattered here and there. We walked toward the south (end) of the beach and came back and all of our things (towels & chairs & sunscreen and books) were still where we left them. The close parking allowed us to pack all of our gear to the beach since it is just a short walk from Kailuana Street.

Again, Thanks for the great tip!

PS. Maybe we will get to Colorado one of these days and you may be able to give us some tips.

We are just back from vacation and found Kailua beach a great disappointment. The beach was greatly erroded and narrow at this time of year. The wind and being sand-blasted was not a pleasant expereince. I hope you have better luck!

Great advice! For some reason we walked the wrong way in the neighborhood and a friendly resident saw us wandering toward the beach and let us in a private locked gate that the neighborhood uses. He was so kind and used a key and gave us access. I say you should wander in the neighborhood along the sidewalk to the beach and maybe you too will run into this wonderful resident! He explained that we drove too far into the neighborhood and would have had to walk back out to the main street to reach the public access.

The gate is located on the beach side of Kailuana Loop but most likely it will be locked. Give it a try, you may get lucky.

Thank you to our new Kailua friend. or as they say in Hawaii, "Mahalo". Now we are back in the NW and long for our time beach time in Kailua.

PS. Suggest the Farmers' Market on Thursday morning for local fresh fruits and mingling with the kind residents.

Thank you for the advice! We were visiting my brother in Kaneohe and asked him about where this location is and he didn't know so we all ventured there in 2 cars and found the area with no problem. When coming from the Kaneohe area (or north of Kailua Bay) it will be the first left after you cross a short bridge.

It was wonderful and we loved the public access's trash cans so we didn't have to haul our lunch rubbich back into the car with us.

Kailuana is not a long a street.

If the people on this site keep directing tourists recreation through this residential neighborhood (which has NO public park or public facilities), it will only be a matter of time before residents, there, get fed-up with the tourist traffic and petition lawmakers to limit beach access and enact strict parking restrictions.

Keep it up, and I wouldn't be surprised to find "NO PARKING" signs popping up along (and around) that street, or they might just form form their own community association; making the street a gated-community and deny access to non-residents.

Be respectful. This is a residential neighborhood, NOT a public park.
