Day trip to Haleakala crater, vegetarian restaurants

Visiting Maui in May 2013 and looking to stay in Lahaina and do some day trips.

1. Could anyone recommend a good company for a hiking day trip to Halekala crater - Lahaina pickup/drop-off included?

2. Almost vegan, any good vegan/vegetarian restaurants?

Thanks in advance.

Choice Health Bar gets great reviews. Chef Sheldon Simeon of Star Noodle and Top Chef TV show recommends it on Twitter!

Sorry, can't help you with Haleakala tours. I go to Maui to be warm!

Have a great trip.

Aloha

Aloha,

Are you not renting a car? If that's the case, you will pay dearly for hiking tour pickup/dropoff.

Hike Maui is a great, longtime company. Normally they have you meet them near the Kahului airport and they drive you to the different hikes from there. I think pickup and dropoff is still available at an extra charge.

Remember that Haleakala is a National Park, and the Park's website has some good info about the different trails in the park (which is 10.00 admission).

F1, I would really encourage you to consider getting a car, if you have not done so already. You can save a lot of money by not having to pay for tours, and you can see a lot more of Maui.

The 10.00 that sw is referring to is per car, not per person, so a savings in itself. You can also use the same receipt within 3 days to enter Oheo Gulch, the other side of Haleakala, just a half hour after Hana.

Thanks for the comments and info.

Due to the challenges we had in planning this (mainly how to get around and see everything), we've decided to go to a nearer carribean island instead. Will still consider Hawaii, perhaps a longer trip later.

Here is a great article on what it feels like at the top of the volcano.
