Any ideas or points of interest from the airport to west end of Maui
Places to see or stop !
After your flight you will be focused on getting the 45 minute drive over and done! There is a lovely pull-out to the left as you cross the Pali for views, but long flights normally mean getting to your lodging!
And you don't really want to stop with all that luggage in your vehicle. Are you flying with Air Canada or WestJet? You might be landing in the dark anyway. If in the daylight, you may want to stop at Costco to stock up on some groceries and mai tais. Or the margarita drink... 1.75 L for 9.99! Be careful... it goes down real easy! Just add ice!
We just flew in yesterday and are staying at the Honua Kai in West Maui. The usual 45 min. trip from the airport took quite a bit longer this time around as they are doing some road work along the highway a few miles before Lahaina. They had one lane completely closed off and were stopping traffic with a flag man going both ways. Traffic was backed up forever. Not such a problem driving in, but make sure you leave plenty of time for the delay on your way back to the airport.
The drive from the airport to west Maui is very scenic, mostly along the shore line. If you feel like pulling over, do it. Just don't go where you can't see your car and you will be fine.
when are you going. We are also from Calgary and flying out of Seattle. Quite a bit cheaper that way. Are you driving to Seattle. We are trying to decide on the fastest route there. Also staying in Seattle for a couple of days to do the outlet mall. Going in July.|
Yes it is cheaper, we got a better price in first class to Maui than , a regular west jet ticket from alberta..
Than on the way back will stay a extra night and enjoy the Inn on the Market, as it is a awesome place to stay and right next to the Pike MArket
We flew out of Seattle for our last trip, just this month, using Hawaiian Air. It was our first time flying out of Seattle. We stayed the night before at the Best Western Executel, but on the way home, we just picked up our van and drove straight to the 49th and my Auntie Joan's place.
I loved that we arrived in Maui during the day light instead of late at night. And we didn't have to wait all day long and most of the evening to depart when it was time to go home. Also, trying to sleep on that flight home is a killer. Then we always have that extra step...get in line for the next ferry home. Yes, Seattle was a great option. Still need to line up for the ferry, whichever airport we use, but I can't get away from that.
With you staying overnight again in Seattle before returning to Calgary, you will also have the option to buy your liquor allowance in Washington State. That will save you some room and weight in the checked luggage! I believe it is still cheaper in Maui than Washington, but still WAY cheaper than our prices.Edited: 11:25 am, May 23, 2012
Moose..Leaving from Seatle? The first thing you want to do upon landing is exit the terminal quickly and look skyward. Not sure which way you will be facing but you will notice a large bright object. Get used to it. This is called the sun. After you get your car, you will immediately meet with some modest congestion. Twenty minutes later you will see the ocean directly in front of you. You will now begin to guide right an be prepared for a memorable ocean vista as you head towards WestMaui. No need to stop, you will see enough on the 25 minute drive.
The Costco parking lot is under reconstruction and the search for a parking space can be frustrating. So if you are stopping give your self extra time and expect a bit of a search.
The road construction on Hwy 30 is going to take a while. They are working on the road directly on the ocean. The road had been undermined by waves and at times the waves and sand were tossed up onto the highway so it was decided to improve the road. Yesterday there was a bit of delay by the Launiopoko traffic light and park. Not too bad.
Always allow extra time when heading for the Kahului airport from the West side. You never miss a plane being early.
