Biking for kids

We will be in Maui June 27-July 7. We would like to rent bikes for the family. Any suggestions? Is it possible to take a 7 and 9 year old down the volcanoe by bike?

Hi Micmac, the different downhill tour companies have different age limits for the volcano ride. Some don't allow kids under 12, another one age 8, with kids age 5-7 allowed on trailer bikes. If your 9 year old is a good cyclist and knows how to handle descending curves, she should be ok, but I would be leery of letting an unexperienced 9 year old do the ride.

Renting bikes on Maui is pretty expensive. I don't know about kids' bikes but my brother in law paid $100 to rent a bike just for the weekend. And I heard from another guy on this forum who got a quote of $250 for 15 days. For that amount you could BUY bikes at K-mart and then give them to charity when you're done.
