Haleakala

We want to see the sunrise at Haleakala, are we better doing a tour or doing it on our own.

Thanks Jan

If you have a rental car anyway, I think you should do it yourself. Then you can see a lot more of the area while Upcountry. Where are you staying? That may help in the decision.

Going for breakfast at Kula Lodge is always popular, but there are other places to choose from as well.

Do your own. You can stay awhile after sunrise and do some short hikes/walks enjoying the summit and views then head down stopping for a bit to eat. Make it a morning or day and enjoy the Upcountry area. It's fun to go to the winery and spot your condo from their location.

Agree with everyone! On your own. We have done both sunrise and sunset. Personally, I like sunset!

In the morning, leave very early. There may be fog and finding parking is tough. It is fun to watch everyone who don't realize how COLD it is. They dress in flip flops, shorts, t-shirts, and use towels from the resorts to keep warm. Then you have to wait for the sun to come up and brun off all the fog to get a great view of Haleakala. The drive down is very slow and watch out for the bikers who bike down.

Sunset is really nice. When we went, there were not a lot of people so we pretty much had the run of the place. We spent the day driving in the Upcountry - beautiful! It is really neat to drive down and see all the lights on in the towns.
