Car Rental Pick-up and return at OGG

We will soon return to Maui and experience the new car rental facility at OGG for the first time. In past trips I would leave my husband to gather our bags as I took the shuttle bus to fetch the car. Upon departure I would drop him with our bags at the terminal and take the shuttle back to meet him after returning the car. How is the new facility and process? Is it easy to navigate? Any tips?

You can still do the drop off and pick up. Just take the tram or walk to the car rental building... go to your agency or down to the cars if you have a “skip the counter” and then follow the signs out and around the building back to baggage. Very easy and big signs direct your way.

We used Skip the Counter with Alamo and the pick up and return process was flawless. We arrived at night and I liked the lighting of the new facility to actually see our vehicle.

on the way back on the tram get off at "The Departure Station" stop rather than take it back to the baggage claim area stop where you picked it up. it makes 2 stopsv

When I asked a similar question, SW provided a couple of links that helped me envision what it would be like. This one was the best.

We are flying out soon and I like to have a good idea of directions and locations. (Yes even with Google Maps, I often have a paper map as well!)

And I'm glad to hear that there is good signage! I've been in the wrong lanes and lost at several airports.

Thanks for the heads up about getting off at the Departure Station when leaving, John...airports are my nemesis!

Remember that the Maui airport is tiny. The driving in a circle is basically the same as before... except now the car facility is in the middle of where you are driving. Everything is very well marked.

When leaving Maui after you’ve dropped off your car, unless you have trouble walking, I suggest you walk back to the airport. There is a path strictly for walking and the walk is ridiculously short. The lines to get on the tram are longer than it takes to walk- at least in evenings when it’s most busy with people leaving. Plus it’s your last chance to be walking outside before a long flight home. 😃

It was super easy! Take the tram. Stand at the platform and wait for it. Otherwise it is only a 5 minute walk if you want to feel the breeze. We did skip the counter with Alamo. Walked down the steps to the area where the cars are parked - showed them my barcode paperwork, picked out a beauty of a green 4 door jeep and took off out the gate! Coming back there is very good sinage for car rental return. Do not sweat it. It was super easy!

From baggage pick up, you just walk across the street to the shuttle tram. It runs every 10 minutes or so. It takes you to the rental car stations. From there, you drive back around to the baggage pick up.
