First trip to Hawaii in May - help!

We are planning our first trip to Hawaii this May from the Midwest. We hope to visit Oahu and the Big Island. Can anyone help us with info on airfare, rental cars (do we really need one?), lodging, don't miss attractions, etc, that are moderately priced? This will probably be a once in a lifetime trip for us, but we don't have a lot of money.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok to make the most of your visits first purchase terrific guidebooks for both islands. Brand new release Oahu Revealed and Big Island Revealed. If you can't find them in your local bookstore you can get them on amazon or at teh web site wizardpub.com.

Now about cars. If you are going to stay on Waikiki while on Oahu then while you enjoy the sites ther you will not need a car. if you plan to venture out of that area you should rent one. Many of the hotels have rental counters where you can get a car just for the days you want. We rented one for a day by reserving the day before. If it's busy time of the year you may need to reserve with more lead time. There is a pretty good bus system on Oahu to take you to most tourists spots if you are going to Pearl Harbor or Huanama Bay.

On the Big Island you will not be able to get anywhere without a car. Reserve one at the airport

The two books cited above will help you with activities, hikes and accomodations. Their online site will show you aerial views of the hotels or condos you've chosen so you'll know where you are in relation to the ocean.

try posting just under "hawaii" forum for help. This one is Maui specific and you have questions re BI and O'ahu. Different islands!

Your name sounds familiar. I used to run the webste "Freedom Store Maui" And i beleeve you purchased from us? I was in the the tour business years ago and we would get people that had spent the bulk of their trip time on Oahu. Thats where wakiki is. They were always so sad that they had not stayed on Maui. Waikik is a big city. Maui has everything ,without the 5 lane highways.
