koa bowls, boxes, rocking chairs, chop stick sets etc. some furniture.
other Hawaiian woods as well if I remember the shop.
Have you been there recently? I'm wondering if they have any koa framed artwork. Have been thinking about buying something and will be in Hawaii soon, but would like to compare prices.
Koa frames are popular throughout the islands. You're quite likely to find that a painting or whatever that you like is already framed in koa.
Hi violet09, As you may or may not know, Koa is a very valuable and highly prized exotic wood. It is also a protected species in Hawaii. Although there are plantations on the big island which are being harvested; only diseased trees or those blown down by a windstorm may be harvested on other islands, and only with a state permit. Hawaiian authorities come down hard on illegal harvesters.
This has made Koa very rare, and expensive. Koa runs the gamut from a light birch look to a rich, dark cherry. Curly Koa which has a shimmer is the most prized. Framers have now augmented their solid Koa frames with those made with Koa veneer. Be sure to ask if the frame is solid Koa or not.
You might try the Christian Riso Gallery in Koloa town for your information. The owner's son has a Koa harvesting permit and would no doubt know about William & Zimmer. They also specialize in Koa frames of all types and profiles. While there, check out the incredible etchings created on pineapple mango paper, and also cast silk with orchid petals. They really look great in Koa! And are only found in Kauai at this gallery.
Hope this helps
Thanks so much!
We have purchased from William & Zimmer for several years and find that they have very well made Koa items at very reasonable prices. Several times at Christmas I have called them and had them ship some of their boxes and other small pieces for gifts. At the store in Lihue, ask for Candace. She is very knowledgeable about koa and other wood items.
