Booked our condo,do we need to book tours 6 months out?

We are so excited to be visiting Kauai for the first time, but were surprised how many condos were booked for Christmas! We finally found one. Do we need to book zipline and helicopter tours this far in advance?

Christmas is the high season in Hawaii, so that is why places book up - sometimes a year in advance. But Kauai isn't as busy as some of the other islands. I would do your research now - finding out who you want to go with, and then call them. Most times, you don't need to book in advance, but because it's Christmas . . . you might want to do that. Maybe they'll tell you to book in Oct or Nov for that December flight. Good luck! :)

We will be there Dec 15-30. Which condo did you book? Kuhio Shores for us. We haven't booked any tours yet, will probably take a snorkel cruise and do the tubing. That's about it for tours.

Oh, and a luau.

We booked Waikomo Stream - almost did Kuhio

Shores - great views! Haven't booked any tours yet, though. We have never spent a Christmas away from home, have you? Trip is the gift for our 3 kids, 16, 14, 11, but was planning on bringing their stockings to fill with goodies for Christmas morn. Also, making our traditional Christmas breakfast. Do you have any ideas about making it special?

edmondite,

Depending on how long you are on island, can be highly relevent if you get to do your tour......you will be here in the winter, and the weather can have a bearing on what you will do.

Currently in the summer months, the zip lining, and tubing are booked a week or more out. So much for not planning ahead for those who want to do these activities.

Over the years, we have done many, many activities on Kauai, always in the summer months. We generally would book our one or two main choices on the first day on island. Leaving the rest of the time open for hiking, snorkeling etc.

Also, we would book our special dinner out at our favorite restuarant. Why, because if we wanted to get a first seating great table at the window, and beat all the chaos of the later thundering herds it was good to plan ahead a bit.

We now live on Kauai, and I work as one of those directors of fun, so I am well aware of what it is like to see families who have not planned ahead, and surprised and disappointed that there are no openings for a zipline or tubing for a week or more.

Most other fun things, like a helo tour, or a Napali is not a major deal, but again planning a big ahead once here might be a good idea.

Just yesterday, I was pau hana, and we thought we would drive up to the Wailua river and rent a double kayak to paddle and then hike up to the water fall....no tour..just kayak ourselves since we have done this few times on previous trips. NO LUCK. Totally booked until next week, monday or tue. My bad, should have thought ahead.

So, we went to plan B, and drove back closer to home and kalapaki beach, and just paddled around the harbor for an hour....not even close to the Wailua river paddle and hike, but we had to take what was available to us. Next week, we will reserve ahead for the Wailua.

Up to you of course, but a little planning ahead, especially when you first get here, and checking the weather forcasts, and ocean conditions might be a good idea.
