North Shore, winter, watersports

Dear experts,

We are looking at the Hanalei Bay area for our first trip to Hawaii, next February. The area appeals to us for the scenery, but we're wondering about the ocean and beaches that time of year. What are the prospects for swimming, beginning surfing classes, snorkeling, etc.? Will we have to drive south every day for those things? thx

Feb can be iffy or it can be wonderful. I was on the North Shore Feb 3-9 this year and there was no snorkeling at the top spots like Kee or Tunnels but hanging around Hanalei Bay was fine. I saw many people taking surf lessons there and swimming but the outer reef had 13-20 foot waves. The weather was wonderful and we didn't have any rain but it was chilly at night. The landscape is gorgeous on the NS but for snorkeling you will most likely have to travel to Poipu or Lydgate.

Jbett has given you some great scoops, and it really is no big deal to drive to another shore for some snorkeling.

We did just that when we stayed in poipu, for many vacations in june/july over the years. We we would drive up north to snorkel tunnels or hideaways, after checking the conditions....or hike one of the north shore trails.

Driving south in the Wintertime......or anytime....you can leave early and be able to use the contra flow lanes heading into Lihue. They place orange cones so that you will have two lanes going south for some of the drive.

Some days, we would be at Poipu, or Lawai, and meet happy visitors from up on the north shore, who wanted to come down south for the day.

No worries, you will probably be visiting the other shores during your visit.
