Waikoloa....a few restaurant changes since last year

Aloha...thought I'd post an update for anyone planning to visit soon.

The Beach Grill (at the golf course) is closed.

O's Bistro (in Kona) closed.

Big Island Steakhouse (the restaurant in King's shops) also closed.

Merriman's Cafe, new chef according to the waitress. Menu somewhat changed. Had one lunch there, was excellent.

Macaroni Grill at Queens Marketplace scheduled to open Nov 24. Island Gourmet food market is open. Also open, Foodland at the Shops at Mauna Lani. Between the two I prefer Foodland.

Palm Terrace breakfast buffet now $35. Closed for dinner. Waffles and pancakes no longer on the ala carte menu. Continental Buffet no longer available.

Brown's Beach House appears to be closed for lunch. I haven't verified this by calling but the website doesn't show it open for lunch and it previously was.

That's great the market is open so late, much needed.

The Marriott has a bar, with live music, which will be open. They serve a bar menu, but not sure how late that goes, you can find out in advance from the hotel.

But guess what, you CAN have late night dinner on weekends at Waikoloa. Sansei's sushi restaurant serves late night food which is discounted, and has karaoke, from 10 to 1 am.

See link, which has phone number and hours:

Re the airport, the rental cars stay open for the last customers, but I believe they expect you to go directly to the shuttle and not dilly dally. The restaurant is inside security. Also, it is BAD. I have sadly had to eat there before flights, and have nothing good to say about the experience or the choices. The prices are of course ridiculous, but that's par for an airport restaurant.

Pack yourself some snack food if you'll need fuel right off the plane, and then go direct to Waikoloa ...

Thanks KK for the link to the restaurant - a great possibility in the event we decide to have a bite to eat.

Regarding the car rental, Beaches, it is, in fact, Alamo, so thanks for confirming the 11:00 pm closing.

Car rentals places in Kona do not close until the last flight is in.. so if your plane is late and you have a car reserved, they will be open. The shuttle pick up is easy to get to, just walk to the road and cross to the middle island. The vans will be by.

Here is the number for Island Gourmet 808-886-3577 just as a heads up, things change fast here, especially how late or early a place opens up or closes ;o) it would only make sense they stay open late but who knows..
