From Waikoloa to Volcano

Is it better to take the Hilo route? How long will the whole trip to VNP take?

Thank you!!

Yes, probably Hamakua (19), but Saddle Road is an option (both go through Hilo).

3 hours but that's without stops?

Thank you KK. I will do the search. By the way, is Waikoloa a good place to avoid VOG? I don't mind cloudy skies but would try to avoid humidity. We are planning to travel in March or May.

If you mean Waikoloa Beach, you are unlikely to encounter vog, humidity, or clouds, the weather's great there pretty much all the time. The Hamakua route to Volcano is longer than the Saddle but is very beautiful, especially if you get good weather.

That's why we don't recommend day trips.

Thank you very much for the info!

Since we will stay at Waikoloa, I wonder if the Makaiwa beach is a good place to do snorkeling?

Yes, assuming the ocean conditions cooperate, Makaiwa is great snorkeling, but as discussed recently, the public access parking lot is a long schlep from the Bay, which is why those staying at the Mauna Lani or any of the condos there are so fortunate since those lodgings come with a beach pass to the gated beach parking lot and/or is walking distance. Try Waialea Bay too for snorkeling if it's flat.
