Sorry (truly), but those prices belong to some other decade. Also there are no good hotels in Hilo. Dolphin Bay is the best motel. Go to the Hilo subforum and check the hotel reviews, left menu link. Also you might take a look at a B&B. I don't see $50 panning out, even at Uncle Billy's, although there is a hostel in Hilo you could check out.

Let us know what you find before you book, and we might save you from something really awful.

For some reason a duplicate topic popped up, so I'm bumping this one up before we end up with replies to both identical topics.

Yep $50 is only gonna get you a private room at a noisy hostel.

Better plan on starting out at $100/night at Dolphin Bay.Hotel.

Even my favorite cabin on the farm starts at $65/night.

Akiko's B&B just north of Hilo is nice if you stay in the PU'UHONUA HOUSE

you can get that down to $55 per night for a bedroom, if you stay 5 nights. Includes pretty good but very early breakfast. Sadly you will have to share a bathroom.

They have a nice community dining and kitchen area you can use as well.

Very peaceful and rustic and off the beaten path (Old Hawaii flavour).

Adding to what TJ said, there will be tax of 13% plus added to the rates, so you want to figure that in. A very few places include tax in the rate, but they are either not paying their taxes or are doing them wrong, as it's supposed to be itemized.

There's another cheap place with a communal kitchen called Wild Ginger Inn. It is right on the noisy highway and has super loud tree frog noise (they all do, but this is worse). It is cheap though. Also look at Seaside Motel and there are a couple other cheap places.

Do NOT stay at Waiakea Villas. Drugee-infested area, no place for a newbie to Hilo.
