The Mauna Lani. That is it. 15 minute walk on rough coral trail, or longer via the road.

There are only two hotels in that resort area, the Fairmont Orchid and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows. They are within walking distance if you walk the trail between them, but they are not within walking distance if you take the road within the resort.

If you are looking for condo complexes near the Orchid; Kamilo, Kulalani, and The Fairways at Mauna Lani.

True, wb, Kat may be using the term loosely.

Kat, the Fairmont is part of a sizable resort area, the Mauna Lani Resort, which contains two hotels, the Fairmont and the Mauna Lani, also golf course, shopping, restaurants.

There are a number of residential housing complexes as well, condo and single family residences. The condo projects aren't separate resorts, but they are in the overall resort. It's not really clear what you are looking to find out here; maybe you could clarify and help us help you?

OP, the point is that the Kohala resorts are not like Waikiki or Kaanapali or Wailea, with a string of resorts and retail places all string along a walkway. They are built on relatively fresh lava, as pipestem "oases" along the highway. See the map or look at Google maps satellite view for the best info.

well put there are only 4 resort areas, comprised of 2 hotels over a 25 mile coast line..... They are many miles apart some Like four seasons are 10 miles from anythhing.... Sort of like Palm Springs or Phoenix... each resort area was developed as an oaisis.

You will need to drive from resort to resort and several are gaited Mauna Kea, Prince, Four Seasons, Kona Village and you will need a pass to enter.

Its not like Miami or as mentioned Oahu both of which are wall to wall highrise............we dont have an high rises anywhere here on this island

"...we dont have an high rises anywhere here on this island." Dan, you need to go to Hilo! Bay Shore Tower is classified as a high rise building!" :):):) (OK, you are almost right, that's the only one on the whole island!)

Ok... well according to the UFC ( uniform fire code) any structure that is 4 floors above grade is a "high rise" and muct be fitted with smoke towers and internal wet and dry stand pipes. Must have sealed windows of temper glass and an air management system. So any building you might visit that has an enclosed stairwell with dual acting doors in a "high rise"

Bet you wished you hadden't asked.....

Hi,

w

We are also staying at the Fairmont Orchid next month and I am interested in this question. It sounds like the walkway between the two resorts isn't like the beautiful curving walkway between the Fairmont in Maui and the Grand Wailea (which goes in front of the Wailea Beach Villas). How walkable is it, and is it worth using?

The walk from Orchid to Mauna Lani is NOT like the Wailea one in Maui.

If starts as sidewalk at either end, then transitions to sand and coral rubble. One needs shoes and some ability to slog thru soft sand. Not good after dark unless you know the way and have a flashlight.

The walk used to be much easier before about 2000. There was a gravel/shell path, only a little soft sand. It went thru a "jungle" complete with an old beached boat. Then they started developing Pauoa Beach and forced walkers down to the public waterline route. There is now a thick hedge that keeps one close to the waterline. Legal and all, but I miss the jungle and the boat.
