that it is not any other island

what is so great is in un commercial, huge and undeveloped....lacks entertainment and glitz ..

Requres of its visitors a prior understanding of its basic and rural nature.......its a place for people who can entertain themselves... not be entertained.....

Why do you ask?

too far inland

contrast between black lava and sparkling blue ocean

white surfline on black lava

seeing the different shades of lava form flows of different eras

seeing the vegetation color change as you look from sea level to upcountry

wet side/dry side contrast

snorkeling over some of the newest land on earth (eg First Flow--lava flow after I wsa born, qualifies as "new" for me)

the clear water and underwater springs

being out on the water in a sailboat

being in the water and moving freely and with power, not creaking along on land

walking along the shoreline in Kohala

the snorkeling at my favorite places and the variety of underwater topography

the way the Puako petroglyphs and Mauna Lani fish ponds just grab my spirit

revisiting favorite places over and over again

no need to dress fancy or hang around lots of people who care about dressing fancy

they know us at the hotel and we are all glad to see each other again

smell of KeAhole airport when I step out the door (fuel, salt, damp air) and I know I have made it back again

Depends on what you like, if you like seeing car dealerships, Lowes, Home Depots, K-marts, Costcos, tall condo buildings and having lots of night life then the Big Island isn't your place. If you want to stay in a place that is how you would imagine Hawaii, quiet, peaceful and serene then you will love the Big Island.

I only had a flying visit back in 1992---saw Volcano NP and stayed out at Kalani Honua near Puna for 2 nights. Didn't even get near the north island, yet I was so impressed I am headed back there (finally) next May for a few days, and even then I already know I'll be going back. It's just such an island of contrasts---but it isn't for everyone (which suits me fine!).

PS: Don't let your first impression, the drive from the airport. discourage you!
