Public transit and safe beaches for children

Looking into staying near southernmost point of the Big Island. Interested in public transit from there to beaches and other popular sites. Especially interested in safe beach areas for children.

Maria, please give us more specific info about where you are looking at staying.

Which community or subdivision?

No public transit that will work for you down there. The schedules are for covering shift workers commuting.

There are no beaches in the southernmost point, especially none safe for children.

You are posting in the Hilo forum, which is the northern part of the east side, so I am really confused.

The southernmost point has almost no infrastructure for tourism, and staying there would make more sense for someone looking for a retreat. Makes no sense for a family with small children.

Yes, your post really doesn't make any sense. There is nowhere on the BI where public transit is really appropriate or available for tourists, but that's double true for Ka'u, and there are no beaches (as one popularly thinks of as beaches) anywhere near the southernmost point of the BI, nor lodging and tourist infrastructure in that area.

Southern most part of the Big Island will be South Point. You could maybe do a long walk to Green Sand Beach for a day hike but not for kids nor is there anything much in the way of accomodations except for some rentals and way off the track for any public transport.

The next closest easy access beach is Black Sand Beach at Punaluu but not kid safe either. Best couple of places for kids might be Waialea Bay on a calm day w/ supervision and the fish catch area at Honokohau Beach just next to the marina. If you must get stuck in one place w/ kids maybe the Hilton Waikoloa.

Otherwise look at other island possibilites such as Oahu might have what you are describing.

Yep public transport in terms of being a tourist don't count on it The most frequent buses are along the main belt loop road around the island. If you absolutely must come w/o a car rental its best to book some bus tours but those will not ferry you back forth to beaches
